Ares I will transport the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle into orbit. Honeywell will spearhead the team as the prime contractor, with systems integration support from Lockheed Martin. Both Honeywell and Lockheed Martin have long-standing relationships with NASA and decades of experience supporting the U.S. space program. “During five decades of U.S. space program experience, Honeywell avionics technologies have performed successfully on numerous launch vehicles,” said Dave Douglass, Vice President, Space, Honeywell Defense and Space. “The extensive expertise of our team will allow us to support NASA in the development, implementation and management of reliable, cost-effective avionics systems for the Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle.” The avionics on the Ares I instrument unit will include an onboard computing system, flight controls to guide the launch vehicle into orbit, communications equipment and inertial measurement units and rate gyro units for navigation. NASA plans to release a request for proposal for the instrument unit in June 2007. A contract award is expected around December. Honeywell has also been selected to build displays and controls for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle, and has avionics systems in place on NASA‘s Space Shuttle and International Space Station.
